Welcome to the website of the Tol Research Group at the University of Michigan!
Our research interests revolve around the smart materials and dynamical systems with an emphasis on phononic crystals(PCs), metamaterials, and metasurfaces for interdisciplinary applications such as energy harvesting, sensing, vibration mitigation, wave guiding and filtering. The theoretical and experimental research program conducted in our lab addresses how to overcome major limitations in engineering applications. Our most current efforts are directed toward the investigation of wave propagation in active metamaterials/PCs, elastic metasurfaces, and nonlinear periodic structures with the objective of designing tunable and adaptive structures and multifunctional devices.
